Session description: Writing a diary entry to recount a day on the Isle of Wight School Journey

WALT – What are the success criteria for writing a diary entry? What did we do on the fourth day of the Isle of Wight trip?
WILF – The ability to create a recount of the fourth day on the Isle of Wight using the success criteria created by the class.

Success Criteria

All: To be able to review the fourth day on the Isle of Wight and begin writing a diary entry to consider the key points.
Some: To critically review the fourth day and create a balanced diary entry which includes the feelings and emotions experienced by the writer.
Few: To create a diary entry for the fourth day using a chatty, informal style which considers the emotions and feelings experienced by those around the writer as well as by themselves.

Pupils will start lesson on carpet (sitting in a place of their choice) to discuss what is needed in order to write a successful diary entry. Then will work in small, subject set groups to recap the main events of the fourth day using their IOW packs and recording on sugar paper. Following this, we will share ideas as a class before pupils begin writing their entries in Literacy books. At times, the class will be called back together to share good ideas and practices.

3 mins time to pack away reading workshop and get onto carpet.
Introduction
5 mins Baseline Activity

To review a couple of good diary entries written about earlier in the week. Pupils to share what they like about them and why they are good examples to use. Questioning will be guided based on pupil ability.

Visualiser to be used to allow work to be projected onto the board for children to discuss and annotate using AverVision 3 software. All – To see what other people remembered about the third day and compare their reflections.

Some – To gain ideas about how their diary entries can be improved and comment on others’ work.
5 mins Using these ideas, as a class pupils will create a list of the key things they believe should be included in a diary entry in order for it to be successful. These ideas will be recorded on the WB by a chosen pupil. Questioning will be used to enforce understanding of what is needed.

Pupil chosen to have more legible handwriting and have been behaving well at start of lesson. All – Pupils to understand what is required within their diary entries.

Few – To be able to suggest possible adaptations to the conventions we discuss in order to personalise their work.

Main Activity
10 mins Pupils to move to subject groups and, as a group on sugar paper to record the memories they have from day four. They will also use their worksheet from the day to remind them. TA to sit with LA group, if required, leading their thoughts and understanding and helping them to record ideas in a logical way. I will support other groups as required. All – To recap what happened on the fourth day.

Some – To record some ideas onto their sugar paper.

Few – To share funny memories to be included.

5 mins As a class, to share ideas that groups have from the day, displaying pictures and keywords on the IWB. All pupils encouraged to participate, using their notes to guide the discussion. All – To share ideas between groups of memories and thoughts from day four.

25 mins Individually, pupils to begin writing their diary entry for the fourth day using their personal and group notes as required.

Periodically, we will stop and share good ideas and practices as a class with pupils being encouraged to say what they have done well. TA to sit with lower ability group, ensuring that they stay on task and remember to follow the success criteria. To help VC to construct sentences if required.

Pupils to consider how others are succeeding in order to improve their work. Visualiser and software to be used for this. All – To begin writing their fourth diary entry using the notes created and the success criteria.

Some – To share good examples of work.

Some – To be able to say why the shared work is good.

Few – To create a more detailed, stylised diary entry.

Plenary
10 mins To come together as a class and discuss what pupils have found easy or difficult.

To then share good pieces of work using the Visualiser, and highlight successes. Pupils can share ideas and consider what other pupils have found.

Visualiser and software used to make good examples more visual and implicit to pupils. All – To share and consolidate work completed.

Some – To share ideas as to why others’ work is successful.

Few – To model good work.
