Visualiser from AVerMedia on Global stage

by Admin 15. July 2010 01:06

I am delighted to announce that the AVerMedia V355AF Visualiser has won the prestigious Worlddidac Award 2010. The Worlddidac Award was created in 1984 with the objective to encourage manufacturers of educational materials to continuous innovation. Today the Worlddidac Award is the most recognised international prize in the Global education sector. It is presented every two years to innovative and pedagogically valuable products with a high potential to improve learning or teaching.

The evaluation criteria included the overall quality, safety, eco-friendliness, ease of use, aesthetics, multi-functionality, design and technological innovation, all of which shone through in the AVerMedia V355AF. Used extensively in schools around the world, Visualisers work alongside established equipment such as interactive whiteboards and digital projectors. Already one
of the stars in AVerMedias product line up, the V355AF Visualiser features a ‘one touch’ record to USB stick capability. By using this feature, high quality audio /video, can be recorded, direct to a USB drive. The one-touch record function is a boon for recording evidence of pupils /students work and with a powerful 80 x zoom and a 5 megapixel camera, which gives 1080P resolution, stunning images can be recorded.

So what makes the award so fulfilling? well we are incredibly honoured to receive this award which recognises the hard work and dedication of our staff, both here in Europe and our overseas colleagues. The V355AF Visualiser is user-friendly, easy to operate and can give proven benefits to both teaching staff and Students alike. Visualisers offer real benefits in the classroom, bringing full interaction and spontaneity to even the most difficult subject matter. In addition, Visualisers can be used for so much in the classroom, from simple ‘show and tell’ exercises to peer-to-peer assessment and student portfolio applications. The beauty of the Visualiser is its straightforward installation, portability and ease of use, which few classroom technologies can compete with and that is a feature which was noted and appreciated by the Awards committee.

A unique trophy will be presented to us during the Worlddidac Exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, in October 2010. it has also been recognised that AVerMedia is officially the the market leading Visualiser manufacturer in Europe, following a recent report into the market by independent research company, Futuresource. Over the past 10 years AVerMedia have been paving the way in gaining the acceptance of Visualisers in the Education sector and it is great to start getting recognition for the efforts which have been made over the years.

Visualise an 18 hour Flight to Taiwan!

by nigel 5. July 2010 10:03
I have been fortunate to be invited to visit the AVerMedia Head Office in Taiwan. This will be my 5th visit and it is a big honour to be selected to meet up with colleagues from around the world. on previous occasions I have flown from Heathrow to Taipei, Taiwans capital city, via Hong Kong, with Cathay Pacific airlines. It has been a great service and luckily, being small in stature, being stuck in Economy hasnt been too much of a hardship. However, this year Cathay have cranked their prices up, meaning I have been scouring the net for alternatives. Only China Airlines do a direct flight from the UK and this is only twice a week, so thats a non-starter. Other popular routings are via Hong Kong, Shanghai or Bangkok. However, I was lucky to notice that Singapore Airlines do flights to Taipei via Singapore (surprise!). So, as they are regarded as one of the Worlds Number 1 airlines I was shocked to find out that their flights were also reasonably priced! My next surprise was that for the first leg of the route; London to Singapore, they fly the new Airbus A380, the worlds largest airliner.

Having looked carefully at the economy seating plan, I am flying out seated on the maindeck, then returning to the UK seated on the upper deck, which, although still Economy, is supposed to be a much more pleasant experience. Downsides? well, the routing via Singapore works out longer than via Hong Kong, at 18 hours rather than 14 hours. Also, there is a very tight 55 minute connection at Singapore Changi Airport to catch the outbound flight to Taipei, but I have been assured that it is do-able by Singapore Airlines and that the flight between London and Singapore usually arrives early! Even so, I am expecting a run between the two terminals, just the thing you need to loosen the joints after a long flight.

So what can I expect when I get to Taipei? Well the meeting agenda is pretty packed, with long days and a good, varied agenda. As always we will talk financials, but a lot of time will be given to products, both existing and those planned for the future. Obviously I cannot comment on future products but the current AVerMedia product line up is pretty special, which has recently been recognised by leading industry market reseach company, Futuresource. Their global Visualiser Report has just been published and they have found that AVerMedia are the Number one brand in terms of product sales, in USA and Western Europe. Naturally, we are extremely pleased about this, but we do not want to rest on our laurels and let the competition catch up, so new, innovative products, designed for ease of use and demonstrable benefits to end-users are the order of the day.

Our Visualisers are second to none, with products to suit most pockets and requirements. From the simple 16 x zoom, gooseneck CP135 / CP155 through to the fully featured 160 x SPB350 / SPB370, we can satisfy every need and help teaching staff, lecturers, trainers and Corporate users the ability to show 2D and 3D matter quickly, simply and very cost effectively. Also coming soon to Europe is the innovative AVerPen product, which has proven to be a huge hit in the US. AVerPen allows for the maximum of interraction and collaboration between groups of students, meaning they can work together on concurrent learning. These are indeed exciting times for AVerMedia and I will update this Blog with news of my visit and my flight!

AVerMedia Visualiser - the star on Teachers TV!

by Admin 14. June 2010 07:59

UK Specialist educational televison channel Teachers TV recently featured AVerMedia Visualisers in their programe, Time Savers Special. The programme shows how an integrated ICT backbone can save teaching staff valuable time.

At the centre of the ICT integration at Broadgreen International School, Liverpool, is its learning platform. It lets teachers easily access pupil and class information, set work for individuals or groups, do all reports online, upload lessons and resources, and access all the information they need when they work from home In class, the school employs extensive use of ICT such as Visualisers, voting pads and Flip video cameras, which are used for such things as staff training, peer assessment and presentations.

To show how the use of ICT saves time, the video followed one teacher through the working day as she shows the reality of extensive use of ICT in school, both in and out of the classroom. AVerMedia Visualisers are extensively featured and the examples show their use in English, Mathematics and Geography. Of great interest is the Geography example, as it features Pupils who have hearing difficulties.

The programme, which lasts 30 minutes, is extremely interesting, covering a wide spread of AV products. AVerMedia Visualisers feature from 6.00 minutes onwards.

AVerPen plus Visualiser plus AVer+ equals AVerClass!

by Admin 3. June 2010 05:20

AVerMedia have recently announced the release of its new collaborative learning tool, AVerPen, to the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) Region. This product compliments the existing AVerMedia Visualiser range, which have become the leading brand for education throughout Europe. Later in the year the product will be phased in to other European countries, including UK, Germany, France and Italy.

So just what is AVerpen? Put simply, AVerPen combines Wireless Slate and Student Response System into one complete product. By combining the intuitive features of these technologies into a mobile, collaborative learning solution, it allows teachers and students to work together for group engagement and immediate feedback. An added bonus is that AVerPen works on virtually any non-reflective hard surface in the classroom or lecture theatre making it truly mobile! At the BETT exhibition AVerMedia asked visitors to their stand a 'pre-production' unit for themselves and it was fascinating to watch as people become comfortable with its 'feel'. Unsurprisingly, children were the first to get to grips with this new technology and were soon writing, drawing, dragging and dropping! Adults appeared to have a slightly longer learning curve, but in time felt confident to use it. Since showing it at BETT, the boffins in Taiwan have tweaked the AVerPen to make it even more responsive.

So why is AVerpen an important new tool in the Classroom? AVerPen has been developed to further increase the interactivity between teacher and student while providing innovative new tools combined in an easy-to-use product. AVerPen allows the teacher to move freely around the classroom, whilst being kept in full control of the lesson. Using student pens alongside the teacher pen allows the class to collaborate and problem-solve together, while the built-in Group Response System provides immediate assessment.

So how does AVerPen Work? Simply connect your PC or laptop to your digital projector, install the AVer+ software supplied with every AVerPen, connect the AVerPen cradle to a USB port and the pens will communicate with the cradle and your computer via Radio Frequency (RF). Once connected, the pens from anywhere in the room, without needing to have a direct line-of-sight to the cradle. You are now ready to teach, interact, collaborate and inspire your students through 360 degree mobility. Teacher pens are able to control all features as well as activate, limit, or expand student pen functions.

AVerPen comes with the new AVer+ software. The new software is compatible with all AVerMedia Visualisers and most proprietary Interactive Whiteboards. Aver+ allows users to create projects using full annotation capability, image capture, video recording, multimedia importing, and more. Users can even share work with other AVer+ users through an in-house local area network for complete class collaboration.

Visualise this... Canoeing on the Canal

by Admin 17. May 2010 06:00
I have just completed a 6 week introductory course in the wonders of flatwater canoeing. Why you might ask? well, being well into my 40's and having kids who race very competitively, I felt (ok, I was bullied!) I should try it so at least I could understand some of the issues they face. So, first things first and to answer some of the questions I get asked if I ever mention canoeing:-

Q - Oh I'd love to try but i dont want to do the 'eskimo' roll
A - You dont need to. Flatwater canoeing is just that, paddling on (mainly) still water. There are a number of types of canoeing, the Eskimo Roll relates to the White Water discipline

Q - Kayak or Canoe? whats the difference?
A - Generally, a canoe is a 'open' craft that is a traditional craft. A Kayak generally has a semi-enclosed cockpit designed for 1, 2 or 4 paddlers

Q - If I go underwater will I get trapped inside?
A -No, flatwater craft have large open cockpits so most paddlers (yes, it WILL happen) fall straight out of the craft.

So, onto the course. I attended a 6 week course held at Leighton Buzzard Canoe Club, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, where I was given an introduction to the basic techniques. On the same course as myself were children as young as 8 years old so it is a truly inclusive sport. The Coaches were excellent and following a thorough briefing on dry land, it was time to go out on the water. I was given a kayak called a Kirton Tercel, which is an adult sized beginners boat and about as stable as you can get. Kayaks are graded according to their stability, with 10 being the most stable and 1 being the wobbliest!. With much fear and trepidation I slithered into the cockpit. Being naturally unbalanced and uncoordinated, just getting in wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but once in and seated it, didnt seem too bad.  Once I had a paddle in hand, it was time to try to move!

Steering is by a rudder mounted below the hull, controlled by wires running to a foot operated tiller bar. Simply, push bar to left, boat goes left and vice versa. For some reason kids find this really straightforward, but adults struggle! I certainly did for a short time, but it soon becomes fairly natural. Over the next 5 weeks, I was taught the basic strokes needed to move, stop, steer the craft, all of which was put in good practice as the kids in their Lightnings (junior starter craft) zoomed all around without fear of anything. So did I fall in? oh yes... the first time was part of the course as its essential that you know how to empty the water out of your boat. If you can imagine a canoe, half filled with water, its heavy and takes a good techinque and some strength to empty. If you do in wrong you could either fill the boat with more water, or even break the kayak in half! So that was a 'planned' fall in, but on the last day of the course I fell in, all by myself and it was all my fault! I tried a wobblier boat out and didnt adjust my seating position correctly, which is vitual to give you control and balance on the water. Luckily, given the excellent tuition I had received, I could empty my boat, get myself warm and get back in the boat and be on my way again.

I have no great aspirations to race but the option is there if I want to. Canoeing is an excellent way to keep fit and get a good workout. Its also an all year round sport, with only frozen water or Lightning storms which can stop it. Its also a good way to get closer to nature and in my 6 weeks of paddling on the canal I've seen fish, Herons, Ducks and Geese from a different perspective. I am looking forward to spending the summer evenings messing about on the canal and hopefully becoming a whole lot more competent!

Schools visualise the future in Havering

by Admin 10. May 2010 04:59
Recently AVerMedia were invited to a school in Havering, Essex, to demonstrate their Visualisers as part of the 'Buildings Schools for the Future' (BSF) programme. Pupils were invited to sample the latest products in education to decide the equipment they want in the classrooms of the future.

Small mixed groups moved from manufacturer to manufacturer to create a 'wish list'. Naturally the latest interactive Ipads / Ipods were very popular, but pupils found that for speed and immediacy, the AVerMedia V355AF was just what they wanted! The Visualiser allowed them to show their work to their peers, as well as the Education Specialists running the event. Pupils used the visualisers 'one-touch' record function to record their thoughts straight to a USB stick. The high quality recording (sound and vision) will be kept as a record of their work and 'needs and wants' for the future of education.

Yet again a Visualiser has proved to be easy to set up, easy to use and quick to deliver stunning presentations. The pupils were enthused by the project in hand and really enjoyed working with the Visualiser and seeing the results of their work immediately!

The Visualiser being demonstrated was the new AVerMedia V355AF. Launched earlier this year to great acclaim from all, but what makes it different from all the other Visualisers currently flooding the market? Well, for starters it’s the latest in a long line of products from AVerMedia, who, since coming into the Education market in the early 2000’s, have established a reputation for making easy to use, reliable and practical products, which are available from a network of knowledgable resellers and are supported by excellent levels of customer service.

But why is the HD1080p ready V355AF so good? Well one of its key features is the ‘One touch’ record function, which allows users to record, directly onto a USB stick / thumb drive, simply with a push of a button, located on the control panel or hand controller. Once the button is pressed, recording commences. Using this function means that up to 2GB / 111 minutes of audio and video can be recorded – ideal for Student Assessment and lesson planning. The V355AF has a built-in microphone in the camera head and can also be connected up to an external mic.

The auto focus V355AF has a large shooting area of 350mm x 270mm, which means that A4 pages can easily be displayed on screen. A high frame rate (24fps) means that video reproduction is seamless. For those wishing to capture still images, the product has an internal storage capacity of 80 images at 5MP resolution or 240 images at XGA resolution.

The V355AF comes complete with AVerMedia’s new Aver+ software, which is a brand new interface which allows users to drawn annotate, record video and audio as well as setting up multiple-user networks and much, much more. Included in the software package is the ability to show split screen and picture-in-picture images. User friendly menus give quick and easy access to hundreds of features giving you complete control of your V355AF Visualiser, whether you are a Mac or PC user.

One-touch Record Visualiser from Avermedia

by Admin 24. March 2010 05:16

AVerMedia have recently introduced the AVerVision V355AF. This product features many new features which are designed to make Teaching even easier. I recently tried out the product and it is simplicity itself to use as a standard Visualiser, with a powerful 80 x zoom and clear images provided via its 5MP camera. All functions can be accessed via the touch panel on the camera base or with the wireless controller, which also has a built in laser pointer. The V355AF can also shoot an A3 object which for the first time means whole book spreads can be shown to your audience.

These features are very useful, but the one which really stands out is the 'One Touch' record function. This function allows you to record audio and video (up to 24 frames per second) content directly to a USB stick; ideal for recording students work for assessments. This can be done by simply pressing the 'one-touch' button on the camera body or hand controller - its as simple as that! Once pressed, a 'record' icon appears on the screen and a maximum of 2GB of data can be recorded. How much is that in real terms? approximately 111 minutes worth, in AVI format. The camera head also has a built in microphone which is of good quality, but if you want to record sound from the rear of the classroom, an external mic can be connected.

All in all the new V355AF from AVerMedia is a highly specified Visualiser which incorporates an excellent range of useable features which are simple and quick to use. The V355AF comes complete with AVerMedia’s new Aver+ software, which is a brand new interface which allows users to draw, annotate, record video and audio as well as setting up multiple-user networks and much, much more. User friendly menus give quick and easy access to hundreds of features giving you complete control of your V355AF Visualiser, whether you are a Mac or PC user. As with all of the latest AVerMedia products, the V355AF comes complete with a 5 Year Warranty for complete peace of mind.

Didacta - Visualiser success for Avermedia in Germany

by Admin 18. March 2010 04:43
AVerMedia are currently (16th - 20th March) exhibiting at the Didacta show in Cologne, Germany. The show is the largest show for education in mainland Europe and features just about every product imaginable! The show takes up 4 halls at the Koelnemesse exhibition centre, which is located in central Cologne, on the banks of the River Rhine. Its interesting to compare exhibiting in Europe to exhibiting in the UK and its clear to see the pros and cons in both.

Show planning is very straightforward with most requirments being done via a easy to use online system. Stand space and build elements are cheaper then the UK and hired components such as shell schemes are in 'as new' condition. Once at the show for build up, the atmosphere is very relaxed and there are masses of staff to help, especially for parking and unloading vehicles - unlike most UK shows! The exhibition centre itself is clean, functional and very accessible, with its own railway station on site. Costs for buying essentials such as food and drink are about the same as the UK too.

So what are the negatives? well from an Exhibitor point of view the show is divided up by school / education type, with dedicated areas for Kindergarten through to University. This is difficult if, like AVerMedia, you operate across the broad spectrum of Education. Also, visitors pay to attend. Admission tickets cost 14 Euros on the door and judging by the mass of visitors queueing to get in on the opening morning of the show, they are more than happy to pay, I cant imagine UK visitors queueing up at Olympia or the NEC!

German schools tend to use less technology than their counterparts in the UK. Interactive Whiteboards are slowly gaining acceptance but most schools wishing to share documents with their class, still use overhead projectors, for which there is still a huge market. AVerMedia displayed their range of new Visualisers at the show their modest 4m x 3m stand. Each product was given its own dedicated area with Visualisers linked to either LCD Screen or digital projectors. The V355AF, which features 'on touch' recording, proved very popular, with many positive comments from visitors to the stand. Teachers were suprised and impressed with just how easy it is to display a 2D or 3D object onto a screen via a Visualiser and could instantly see the advantages over the traditional OHP. Even at Kindergarten level, there are many applications for Visualisers, which allow Teachers to show books, pictures and postcards during 'show and tell' sessions.

Moving up to higher level education, more specified Visualisers such as the auto focus CP155, CP355 and V355AF models offer huge possibilities for users and by using AVer+ software supplied with every product, capture, annotate, record and time lapse functions can be accessed. These functions not only bring life and vitality to teaching the most challenging subjects, but also allow teaching staff to save a record of pupils work for assessment purposes.
